Post by smwalker »

Changed the title on this thread to be a more general discussion of sound deadening topics for the Caprice

Just wanted to share with you guys I sent some measurements over to Sound Deadener Showdown and he put together a package for our Caprices. NOT CHEAP!! but I plan to give it a shot later this year with a complete detailing of the install of course.

If anyone want to go first please do! :D

C-Pillars (each):
1.5 CLD Tiles™
2.4 ft² 3/4" Hydrophobic Melamine Foam

* Be very careful if there are airbags in the C-Pillars. The safest
course in that case is to do nothing.

Trunk Floor / Spare Tire Well:

5 CLD Tiles™, sides of spare well
26.4 ft² MLV
26.4 ft² 1/8" CCF

25.8 ft² 3/4" Hydrophobic Melamine Foam
32 Velcro Strips, adhesive 2 sides
1 32 oz can HH-66 Vinyl Contact Cement

* I really like filling the voids in the rear quarter panels with 1.5"
Hydrophobic Melamine Foam but it's very hard to calculate how much you'd
need without looking in the space. I haven't included any for that space.

As an Order:
91 CLD Tiles™ @ 2.25 = $204.75
1 roll Extruded Butyl Rope @ 9.75 = 9.75
30 linear ft MLV @ 9.78 = 293.40
12 sheets 1/8" CCF @ 15.55 = 186.60
7 pieces ft² 3/4" Hydrophobic Melamine Foam @ 19.00 = 133.00
32 Velcro Strips, adhesive 2 sides @ 1.47 = 47.04

I wonder (not that it's a real concern) how much all of that weighs, and what the flammability characteristics are. And with some of the products used being expandable void fillers, how might that impact body repair, whether regular methods or PDR....not to discredit the effort, but to try to look beyond the good intentions for potential downsides.

I can certainly vouch for the effectiveness of dampening material on the roof and rear deck & trunk lid....doors would be my next focus if continuing the effort--it's been 3 years since that was done.

That said, for now it just gets driven.

Steve, check your PM's!

Yea not for the racers in the crowd. Thought I read somewhere a fully done car would add about 130 Lbs. of material. He has some videos of the fire tests, he has only chosen stuff that performs very well in that regard and also all his foam is treated to be hydrophobic and repel water. Only thing permanently stuck to the body is the CDL tiles and those are similar to factory pieces (the few that we have).

Not seeing any PM's for me?? You send one?

There is better choices that fall in between the 2 of these options and also there is the "lizard skin" type of liquid dampeners which is probably the best way to do it DIY if you are serious. I'm sure you car will sound great if you actually have installed all that and done it correctly. I know the effort i put into doing the doors and rear deck did make a difference but it was a huge amount of work and I know there was compromises made due to fitting the material and other issues like cutting wrong. That said I'm still thinking continuing on into the floor area using the roll in stuff like I've done in jeeps.

And thats the difference between the two schools of thought on doing doors. they seal the whole thing up so getting to your internal parts if they fail will be a mess. Not a big deal if you are going to do it yourself but take it to a shop and they add 2 hours labor just to get to the parts. SDS approach is hanging the material with velcro so you just remove the blanket of deadener when needed.

It has begun:

I think the roof is going to benefit the most from it, there is nothing up there from the factory.

But each of the doors got one big ol piece of deadner on the inside:
