Another broken power window wire thread

Post by CapriceX2 »

My driver side front window went from intermittently working to non functional recently. Decided it was time to check out the wiring in the door hinge area as has been documented here before. Just looking at the boot indicated it has been worked on before. The boot is slit and tie banded back closed. As soon as I snipped the tie band I got enough of a view to be pretty confident where the problem would be. See it?

Yep. Darn crimp on butt splice in the middle of the section that needs to flex. The brown/orange wire was just laying loose in the splice:

I also found the blue wire on its way out.

I ended up cutting both wires back as far as I could to attempt to get to an area of the harness that would not flex so much. Here is the connector end at the body.

I’ll report back if this repair doesn’t hold up. With the multiple broken wires reported by others, I suspect I’ll be back in here again at some point.

I thought this maybe the problem, intermitten here also.....wonder in the long run of its worthwhile changing over to a contact on either side of door, such as in a hotrod build etc.....thx for the info....

You're welcome!
Contacts would be pretty cool. You just loose electrical when the door is open, right?
My repair is still holding up fine, but it has only been a year. If I have problems again, I'll likely just remove the complete harness and rebuild it with quality wire.
