Final drive gear oil is not food

Post by HoldOn SV »

I just bought 2qts. of GM 92184900 gear oil, and noticed "use by 7/2023" on the bottle. Is that an "install by" date or a "replace by" date?

It's hard to imagine there would be an age problem. Since cars use this stuff for several years (at least), I would assume that the "freshness date" is an "install by" date.
When I did my diff (3.27), I used a different product which I think is more current. 10-4034 88862624 - contains the friction modifier. I do not recall it having a date on it.
Current: 2013 9C3, deeper trans pan, 12VoltSolutions Remote, Class III hitch, Android Auto capable radio

They're just getting on board with the same BS that the food industry is doing with their Best Before dates so we would throw out perfectly good food. It doesn't mean it's gone bad, it's just not as fresh.
