Headers

Post by ryanswit »

Has aNY progress breakthroughs been made on non oil cooler removal headers? I'm in the same situation as a lot of other guys, where there is no special or performance exhaust shops near me to fabricate a set or driver side.

Kooks headers for the SS sedan work, AFAIK....not sure about any others.

JBA supposedly has a set for the SS, too, at 2/3 the price of the Kooks, that supposedly boly to their cat-back, but they still show nothing on their web site.

I installed the Kooks headers for 2014 Chevy SS on my 2011 Caprice.- they do fit around the oil cooler, slide right up in from the underside of the car.They won't bolt up to the OEM cats but the Chevy SS x-pipe with cats fits good too.

The complete catted X-pipe is 3" then necks down to 2 1/2" for the stock SS muffler connection- that final connection to the axle back needs some modification.

Remove spark plugs and wires, engine oil dipstick tube, disconnect steering shaft from the rack and set aside, remove the old exhaust manifolds, and the headers go right back on.
The only interference issue I had was the A/C line at the compressor has this little can on it that was right up against the front tube of the Right side header. I had to bend the A/C line forward slightly to gain some margin.
Also the Left hand front O2 sensor wire is about 4" to short to plug back in- I got a harness extension off ebay for that.
They come with gaskets and locking bolts.
Best price I found was Maryland Speed-

If you call them you get a better price- be sure to ask when they'll ship out as for the best price, you will wait longer.
I went with the 1 3/4 vs the 1 7/8 for my street daily driver. there's a lot of debate over that subject. The tech at Kooks recommended the 1 3/4.
She's going back up on the rack in a few days for a trans service- can get some pics if you want.

You guys are awesome. Now next question. If I go on Amazon.com and type my vehicle as 2014 chevy ss, it gives me a bbk performance long tubr header and off road pipe for $600 ish bucks. Following that part number back to bbk leads me to a camaro header. When asked, bbk says it is indeed a camaro part. Is a camaro header close enough to fit an ss, or is amazon completely wrong? Bbk also says they don't make one for an ss

What was the issue for not bolting up to the oem cats? I was hoping to do just the headers and connect them to my current system. Is it something that could be modified to work?

There are good pics here: viewtopic.php?f=16&t=811" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The OEM cats are right off the manifolds so the headers take up all the space that the manifold/cat assemblies were in. The header collector might be in same general area as the rest of the OEM exhuast. The header is 3" ball & socket connection and the OEM pipe is 2 1/4" 2 bolt flange. If you could fab that connection the rest of the oem exhaist would wprk but it would not have the main cat converters. I can measure where the header outlet is of you want to know.
