90psi Oil pressure??

Post by WasonJinn »

Hello all,

Today while driving to work my car threw a CEL, hooked up the scanner and it was PO521, oil pressure warning.

The scanner app is reading 85-90psi at idle up to 95psi around 2-3K. I limped it home so never got much over that rpm to see any higher.

My main question is just to verify that the units of pressure used is really psi and not KPA. It seems like it...but seems odd that my oil pressure has jumped so high all of a sudden. Which leads to my next question...what would cause the spiked oil pressure?

It's almost certainly a failed oil pressure sensor. It's a common failure mode.

All the failures I've seen are for a low oil pressure on that sensor but I suppose it's possible it could show high. Replace it and see if it's still the same. If it is, then you'll have to check with a mechanical test gauge. It could indicate a stuck pressure relief valve in the oil pump.

Yeah I figure tomorrow I’ll get a new sensor and try to find a t fitting to also install a mechanical/digital gauge. Then I can nail down exactly what is happening. Hopefully just the sensor failed.

When I went to unplug the pressure sensor I found this loose connector right in that same area behind the intake, anyone know what this goes to?

It definitely happens. I've seen 2 this year. One was on my own Silverado.

Well I replaced the sensor today, and all seems back to normal!! Nice that it was that simple!

This screenshot below is at idle. Thanks for the suggestions!

Additional question, the filter insert that comes with the pressure sensor…is that strictly necessary? There wasn’t one in place when I removed the old filter so I didn’t put the new one in. This car does have the DOD removed via a BTR cam swap.

No need for the filter.
