2014 Caprice - Fuel System DTCs P023F-00 / P069E-00

Post by rcg530 »

I drove my 2014 Caprice down the local wrecking yard to pickup a couple of interior panels. I attempted to leave and the engine would not start (did not hear the fuel pump run). A nice person loaned me his code reader and the P069E and P023F codes where present. Looks like the fuel pump was not running at all.

Here are the DTCs viewed on my Autel MS906 scan tool:

I read a few different threads on this site about the fuel pump electrical connector being a potential source of this issue due to a burnt ground connector or even at the fuel pump control module (located under the main battery). I examined all of the connectors near the fuel tank (external) and of course I can't get to the fuel pump nor its connector without dropping the tank or cutting an access hole. I was able to finally access the fuel pump control module under the main battery and its connector pins look clean and no signs of corrosion.

I found a post where @smwalker stated that G8 owners have been cutting an access hole to gain access to the fuel pump and its electrical connector. G8 owners were using a part from g8only to cover up the hole after the work was completed. The next pic is the cover that Steve posted stating its the one that G8 owners use with a link but the link points to the second picture with a flat cover piece. I would imagine that I need a cover with a hump in it like the OEM metal over the pump in my 2014 Caprice, correct? If so, is there a cover like the one pictured in the first picture (black cover version). I checked ssonly and I didn't see any cover on that site for the 14-17 Chevy SS Sedan.

I'm expecting to find either the electrical connector for the fuel pump having a burnt ground wire/pin or the fuel pump itself failed. Either way, I need to cut a hole in the floor metal to perform the work. I'd like to get a cover that is correct for the 2014 Caprice.

Thanks.

I used my Dremel tool to cut an access hole to the fuel pump in my 2014 Chevy Caprice PPV. I removed the fuel pump connector and found a burnt 12-volt power supply pin number 1 and a somewhat melted connector housing. Parts are on order to replace the connector with a new pigtail and a new fuel pump and level sender unit.

I'm interested in what you use for a cover, I've been tempted to cut this hole as a preventive measure so I'm not having to do extra work when or if it ever fails.

if you look at the G8 cover , you can see a shadow casting from it , its not a flat piece of aluminum like you are thinking , there is a spacer between the lid and the floor pan

I was able to get the new fuel pump and new pigtail connector installed this afternoon. The DTCs are gone and the test drive went well. I'll be sealing up the wiring harness this weekend and get the access hole metal put back in place and sealed as well.

I should have a video on my YouTube channel for this issue early next week.

Thanks for posting that. That's a fair amount of work. Shame the harness repair didn't come with the harness-side connectors so you could just cut the bad connectors off and insert them into the new plastic connector. That would have made for a much cleaner install.

That work light looks nice. Something like that could be handy in my shop. What brand/model is it? Can you also post the model number for the lock ring tool? Looks like it's nearly impossible to R&R that ring without one.

Hi @CrashTestDummy!

The work and filming was spread over a 5 day period since I had to wait for various tools and parts to arrive. Filming always seems to triple the amount of time to do anything.

The lock ring tool is a Kent-Moore J-45722 specialty service tool. I purchased the one used in the video (used tool) for $80 on eBay. That tool costs between $115 and $140 new.

The led light is a Braun 63958 390 Lumen Magnetic Slim Bar Folding Rechargeable LED Light. You can get them at Harbor Freight or Amazon.

If you're going to buy the led light, you can help support my channel by using the affiliate link I just added for that light in the description section of the video. The affiliate link will take you to the product on the Amazon website and it won't cost you anything extra, but my company will get a small commission for that purchase or any other purchase you make on Amazon's website for 24 hours after clicking on my affiliate link.

Thank you, sir! I'll get that light ordered this afternoon. Thanks for the Ken Tool number. Looks like it's now the new 'standard' for that locking ring, working on several different makes and models post about 2004, or so.

Got my light and lock ring tool. I hesitated to order, since I was concerned that the light only put out 300-some-odd lumens, but figured that at the price, it wouldn't be a big loss if it suxored. I was taken aback at the weight when it arrived. It is so light it felt cheap, but it's really pretty solid, and the light output is amazing. Two thumbs up! Too bad it won't fold in half for better storage, but for the price it will be fine. Should make a nicer task light than my 6X9 LED spot light when I need to crawl under anything. Thanks.
