I am not a real big electronics guy but is there not some sort of diode that only allows a certain voltage through? So maybe like anything over 3 volts get let through? Not even sure it would be called a diode.

How it works technically inside the shifter is by sending different Ohms resistance through the Signal wire back to the BCM. It has been confirmed in many instances that AFM engine from GM are getting a pass with a tune in CA. As long as all your monitors are reporting as factory then any tune is OK.
