DoD Delete Kit parts list?

Post by AlucarDx757 »

Hello All,

I'm new to the forums I am looking to pickup a Caprice PPV at auction in the near future and I noticed there are tons of options for DoD delete kits. So since my build is on a budget and I want reliability as well I looked at comparing GM parts vs these kits and honestly they do not seem any cheaper if not some more expensive. So I am thinking of going the route of just purchasing parts to make a kit. Also as long as I get most of the parts from reputable sellers I also get 24month warranty on most of them. So here is my parts list for a DoD delete Kit and while I'm in there parts. To make sure I'm also not replacing unnecessary to replace parts I wanted some Caprice Gurus to look it over to make sure I'm not forgetting anything or over doing something that really doesn't need to be done.

Your list looks pretty complete. If not included, you should replace the oil pump to pickup seal while you're there. And you should also block off the oil pressure bypass in the oil pan. Might as well replace the oil pump too but just be sure to get the high pressure/high volume version for DOD. I used a Melling 10355 HV pump in my 2008 6.0 L77 Avalanche and brought my pressure up to normal levels, even without taking plugging the oil pan bypass (this was before I knew about it).

1. I wouldn't replace the ignition coils unless you know there is an issue with them. I would only do plugs and wires.
2. Might want to send the injectors out to be cleaned while apart.
3. You don't need new factory rocker arms, stands, and bolts. I would reuse them and just swap out the trunions with the CHE kit.
4. I would not get a factory cam. Upgrade the cam based on other performance upgrades. If you are doing all the work for a DOD delete I would at least do a stage 1 cam for better sound and performance.
5. I would get a new oil pump since you already there.
6. I would block off the bypass in the oil pan.
7. I wouldn't replace the harmonic balancer. No need to unless the rubber is degraded and it is out of alignment. I would only replace if bad, going to LSA, or want to run a undersized Powerbond for a few HP. Def get a new bolt; TTY.
8. I would consider new idler pulleys, belts, and/or tensioners depending on miles while you have it apart.
9. I would have the heads looked at while apart. Either cleaned up and reused, maybe a little milling off to increase compression ratio, check valve seats, and/or port/valve job. Measure length for new pushrods.
10. I wouldn't replace the timing cover. Just clean it up and use a gasket kit.

Love the cam. Should be a nice improvement while keeping things mild and street friendly. Can't wait to hear about real world results. Have you thought about any performance improvements? Cold air intake or exhaust? It would be easy to do while you have the motor apart since the parts will already be removed. Will go nicely with the cam for HP/TQ increase.

Yes I'm looking at speed engineering headers and midpipe, and modified stock intake for my v1 setup. However it really depends on how much I get from my current vehicle on if I can do those mods now or later. For my v2 setup when funds eventually allow and over time, I'm going solo 3", big cam, ported lsa or ls3 heads, rotofab intake, circle d coverter and trans, and a nice shot of nitrous.

Kind of torn on what to do. Can’t decide between the LS3 12623063 or BTR stage 1v2. The car is my daily and if I go the BTR route, I’ll probably just leave it on stock exhaust (how much will it hinder the car)? Also, how much “pull” at idle will there be with the stage 1?

If I do the LS3 cam, might do j pipes at the most or cutouts..but want to keep everything fairly quiet but still fun (I get home in the middle of the night sometimes with work so need something that won’t wake the kids or wife).

Definitely appreciate the list of items needed, the name “honey badger” sounds like a very nice cam. I will go over the list as well, as I am just getting into enjoying a PPV purchased, still deciding in what direction to go in a few areas. The stock exhaust idea I like too, or at least to experiment with how much the car comes to life without it. Thanks for the post.

OP, any updates? I'm curious about your final cam choice. I'm currently in the same dilemma. From the videos I've watched, that Honey Badger cam sounds good.
