14+ V8 alternator

Post by Black6 »

Does anyone have experience or know anything that cross references with alternators for 14+ V8 cars?

I went to Rock Auto and looked up the alternator (wish I hadn't, they are expensive.) When you click on the part number on their site, it shows what other cars use that same part. Unfortunately, it appears to me that the alternator is only used on the PPV and the SS. I'm not sure what is different about our alternator from any other LS-based car like a Camaro. Output maybe?

There are a few on the 'Bay for just over $110, if that's an option for you...

This is going to be a bit of a long-winded post. I spent some time this evening researching the cross-references on alternators for the V8 Caprices. I had to look into a replacement alternator recently for the 2015 LFX car I recently drove to Oklahoma, the research I did on this gave me the incentive to run this one down as well. BTW that alternator suffered a primary shaft failure, stupid thing somehow broke into two pieces. It locked up internally, however the shaft fractured and still spun off the front pulley. A "Service Charging System" message flagged it. Never heard of one doing that before!

ALL of the alternators for ALL of the Caprices from 2011-2017 (looks like either 3 or 4 variants, depending on case form factor comparison) are manufactured originally by Mitsubishi. For this post I'll leave out the V6 LFX alternator info., and just post up the V8 6.0 car info. Two alternators are available for the 14-17 Caprice with the L77. You have the P/N 92254798 which is the 170 amp version, and the 92254672 which is the 140 amp version. Now, which one do you need? Maybe s/c'd cav could chime in here as far as the exact callout he shows. The 2014 L77 I looked up through GM Parts Direct wanted either the 170-amp or the 140-amp alternator.

Now, as far as interchange for replacement/reman units on the 170 amp alternator.... hold onto your hats as this gets interesting!

The Mitsubishi P/N for this alternator is either A003TX0981 or A3TX0981 or A003TX1481, or A3TX1481. There are a LOT of reman sites for this particular alternator. I Googled for a while and also looked over Rock Auto for substitutes. Here's what was listed for the 170-amp version (since we're really looking for VF L77 alternators for Black6).

Pure Energy, model 10282 - Reman
BBB Industries, model 11643. Reman.
FVP, model 10282. Reman.
Remy, model 20015. Reman.
HN Rock, model JFZ1926-5B. New alternator out of CN. This company is the "Zhengzhou Rock Auto Parts Co. LTD". Things that make you go Hmmmm...... :o :o
AutoBridge Xiamen Parts Co, Fujian, CN. New alternator, crossed from the Mitsubishi P/N's. Listed on AliBaba.com.
Dixie, model A-80652. Reman.
Wilson, model 90-27-3434. Reman.
Lester, model 10194. Reman.

Looks like one major reman center on a few of these alternator models is Motorcar Parts of America out of California.

---------------------------------

140-amp alternators, GM P/N 92254672.
Mitsubishi P/N's A002TX3981, A002TX3781, A2TX3981, A2TX3781.

This alternator is called out for the 2014-2017 L77 as well as the 92254798. Here's what I found for the subs on this one....

Pure Energy, model 10261. Reman.
BBB Industries, model 42073. Reman.
Remy, model 22042. Reman.
FVP, model 10261. Reman.
HN Rock, unknown model #. The Zhengzhou Rock Auto Parts Co. LTD makes this one also.

-----------------------------------

Just a quickie, the 2011-2013 L77 also took a 170-amp alternator. It's part numbers were also the Mitsubishi A003TX0981, A003TX1481, A3TX0981, A3TX1481.
GM part numbers are 92247651 or 92258220. The 92247651 shows NLA, the 92258220 shows on backorder.
The BBB and Remy cross references are the same as on the 92254798, however (from Rock Auto) it shows a FVP10194 for these cars. It shows out of stock anyway, so it's an outlier.
O' Reilly Auto Parts also sells Ultima 170-amp alternators, models R110524 A or B, $391 each. That's their house brand, not sure who makes those for O' Reilly.

Internally you should be able to use the 92254798, but someone needs to eyeball the case & electrical connector on this one to make sure they're identical to the 92258220. If you lose an alternator on a 11-13, it's either rebuild the problem child or upgrade to the 14-17 version if the interchange really pans out.

-----------------------------------

OK, I'm done. Eyeballs counter-rotating yet?

Thanks
Eric

oddly the 140amp listing is only 14-16 , 17 only shows the 170amp , the 11-13 cars only show the 170amp , so its kinda odd they made a 140amp for the 14-16's , my guess is they did it for the single battery cars

the SS alt's are a different part # from the caprice 140's , which seems odd to me on why they wouldnt use the same one , SS part # 92421122

the GTO crowd had issues finding alternators 15 years ago , same with starters , all on holden not sourcing them same as the GM USA does

So these alternators have clutches on them, that’s what went bad on mine.

Local rebuild place wouldn’t replace just the clutch, would only do a $450 rebuild.

Got alt from Gmpd shipped for $330.

I’m just wondering if we can throw camaro 5 alts on them and run them or if connectors are the same and or if not having a clutch is an issue.

Finding parts for these cars will end up being headaches. I had to wait a week for my parts to get here. Now I have a spare starter and alt.

The clutches, or Overriding Alternator Pulley or OAP are very advantageous to have as opposed to a straight pulley. The amount of vibration and fluctuations they prevent is very good for the long term wear of all the pulley systems.
