I came (back) from the land down unda

Post by yargnits »

I went to Sydney for work and had plans to find misc parts for my 2011. The way they dispose of cars is a lot different than here. A “wrecker” buys a totaled car, removes all sellable parts, then crushes it for scrap. I did find a couple yards like what we have, but it’s rare.

I was told the wrecker to go to in the Sydney area was Commwreck, so that’s where I went. I bought a battery compartment cover for my trunk and asked about the rear grab handles. The woman at Commwreck said “Oh, you mean ‘Jesus’ handles”. I laughed and asked why they’re called than and she said if you have to grab them you’re likely yelling Jeeesssuuussss! I asked for grey. It was told the only two colors were black and beige. I kinda knew that from posts I’ve read here and took the black ones. Total was about 20usd.

I also went to a couple Holden dealers while there. The first was Wilson’s to look for merchandise and price some parts. The guy there set me up with a couple Calendars and a bag of pens to give out to Holden fans. As mentioned in another post, I went to Sutton’s too. I was told they have the most merch for a dealer, but it was a pretty sad selection. I picked up a simple Holden hat. All the cooler stuff is sold mostly by the race teams or specialty shops out of the Melbourne area via the internet.

Every place I went the people were extremely nice and helpful. There’s a lot of proud, but unhappy Holden fans there. Mad that the rear-wheel V8s are gone. Anyway, I’ll add some pics of misc cars I saw. The white VF w/yellow trim WN was pretty sweet. I saw only one or two WMs and wasn’t able to get pics.

Nice! Been too long since I was there last - 1996. I can just imagine the Holden faithful are having a tough time.

The blue VF - Camaro wheels, or a clone? They don't really look like 20's.

The white/yellow trimmed car is VF, not WN....but no matter, nicely turned-out! Actually looks like it's HSV, or has some HSV parts - rear bumper cover (or whatever they call it down there).

I realized I incorrectly put WN and came back to change it. Not sure what the wheels were. That car was parked at Sutton’s Part warehouse. Here’s the last one...

Cool stuff! Never been but would love to go... maybe when the kids are grown. How long is the flight?

Thanks for posting the pics. See much reverse badging (Holdens with Pontiac/Chevy badges)?

The guy that has the interior had Chevy badges, but otherwise no. Sadly, Holdens didn't dominate the roads.

Looks like the same thing everyone and their mother do on the caprice Facebook page. Spend $100’s of dollars to put badges on a car that isn’t. So silly.

You mean those guys in Australia putting bow ties on Holdens? Yeah, silly to make their cars look like Chevys.

If I could find a set used I'd be all over them, tough to justify the cost of new unless I had money burning an aggressive hole in my pocket. Too many other things to fix still.

Ah well.
