Will VIN let you know if a car is 9C3 or 9C1?

Take the VIN to a local GM dealer and let them print out a build sheet.

Or check the SPID label on the underside of the trunk lid.

There is a free vin decoder on line. I have pasted the link below along with t VIN for a Caprice. It will show 9C1 or 9C3 several rows down.

On a Caprice, the SPID is usually on the underside of the spare tire cover. At least it was in 2012, Hence my signature note. So taking the VIN to the dealer may be the only alternative if it is missing from the car.

There were 9C3's from 2011-2013, 2014-2017 had the 9C1 model only.

A very simple & fast way to tell a 9C1 from a 9C3... 9C1's had the shifter mounted as a stand-alone unit at the forward left edge of the console. 9C3's had the G8-style center console with the shifter in the center. Always check the SPID label for the option code however, a 9C3 should have the 9C3 code listed on the SPID label.

Good luck!

And if you suspect a car you're looking at has been converted to a G8 centre console, the dead giveaway is that the window controls will still be in the door. Very few people (or nobody) will go through the trouble of moving the wiring from the door to the console and opt to use a 3D printed filler or cubby in the console's window switch hole.

I went through the trouble of doing it. My 9c1 still has rubber floors, so that's the dead giveaway. 9C3 came with carpet

Another one concerning the carpet, if a G8 carpet was used, it won't go all the way under the rear seat, leaving a gap in the corners since the Caprice is longer than the G8. I left the rubber mat under the carpet.

My 2013 9C1 was ordered with carpeting and electric outside mirrors, so not all 9C1's have vinyl flooring.
