Idle hrs to engine miles

Post by Ctuck21 »

Looking at a 2014 and it is listed as 74k miles with 36xx idle and 62xx engine. Does this seem decent?

While that kind of conversion is a bit of a guessing game, the industry standard is around 33. So multiply idle hours by 33 to get an additional mileage number. If I was looking for one, and it was a 6.0 car, those numbers would be just fine with me.

That’s what I was actually looking for but couldn’t find. Saw what Fords Interceptor 1 idle Hr was equivalent too but not the caprice.

Thanks!

Years ago in the construction industry, 40 mph was a number that was commonly used. Most equipment didn’t sit and idle. If it was running, it was working with a load. I personally don’t agree with the 30 mph equivalent on a modern fuel injected car that is idling. RPM’s are low and the loads are light. You do have some extra wear on electrical components that spin at the same speed whether the car is idling or driving down the road. The worst part is all of the plastic that gets cooked under the hood. I wouldn’t worry about the 3600 idle hours. I have cars with more and cars with less and they are equally reliable, considering how they were driven.
