Pontiac G8 That Helped Land U-2 Spy Planes

Post by Mooseman »

Interesting story on the Caprice's predecessor that guided the U2's landings.

Tried to find it at Gov Deals, either for sale or sold, and it's not there. Maybe someone with better searching skills can find it and how much it went for. Being a GT with low mileage and its pedigree would have commanded high dollar.

I poked around GovDeals but did not find anything in completed auctions. I believe I saw somewhere that it sold for around $27,000 with buyers premium.

There is a G8 that sold on GovDeals on 12/14/21 for an all in cost of $21,264. Looks very similar to the car in the article, however, i dont think it is the same one. Mileage is slightly higher (50K) and doesn't have the red inserts in the seats.

Landing U-2's isn't anything unique for us here on the Space Coast. There's been a U-2 at Patrick Space Force Base for many years that's under control of NASA - used for research. I've personally seen it done a number of times - the first time the chase car was a 1983 Dodge Diplomat with a V-6! Special order for the USAF used for base security, the motors were extremely ICKY to work on because the Air Force, in their infinite wisdom, sprayed the cars with goopy black undercoating that went everywhere..... and it stank when it was hot.... yeucch!

The G8's are just way more sexier!
