Video: The Holden closure

Post by Mooseman »

This is a TV report about the shutdown before it happened and how Holden and the community supported its workers. I was really impressed with how Holden helped its employees find other jobs and even allowed other employers in to poach them.

And also found this one, which showed the build of the last Commodore and the future of Holden:

Reminds me of the time GM ceased production of the RWD B-Body. We didn't go that time, but many of our Impala SS club went to watch the last one roll off the line. We were there a year earlier, after the announcement, but before the closing. Part of the tour was an area where they showed the next year's production, the Tahoe/Yukon/Escalade that are now built in that factory. Even by then, many of the cars rolling off the line were FWBs with no rear window and no deck lid.

I just wonder how quiet it was when the last part was installed on the last Holden? I'll bet that was eerie! Another movie in the 'next up' list was an Australian blogger who talked about the why and how of the closure. Kind of conspiracy-ish, but the reasons are believable.

And I seem to latch onto vehicles produced in defunct factories. The TrailBlazer, Envoy, etc. (GMT360/370) suffered the same fate and they made a documentary called "The Last Truck". That one was more dramatic as there didn't seem to be support for the workers by GM and they closed just before Christmas. Heartless and sad really.

Yep! It seems that most manufacturers really get it right the year they cancel the project. I'm not sure WTF is going on in the Great White Towers, but there's a definite disconnect between the C-suite and some awesome cars getting driven out the end of the assembly line. I know what happened with the Impala/FWB/Roadmaster, they could make stupid profits rolling those overweight station wagons out the back door, so they went for profits. Some of the other vehicles, though (GN, Turbo GTA, Dakota R/T, GC SRT, RX7, Supra, etc.), What were they, thinking?

About the only vehicle line they haven't fscked-up is the Vette, but someone, somewhere, had the intelligence to get a completely separate assembly line for those, so hopefully they won't be replacing them with Bolts any time soon. :|
