DUIs wreak havoc

Post by Troutman »

Here's the archive of known media-reported DUI Caprice accidents. Unfortunately I don't have any details on how the cases turned out.

January 2013:
The first incident was in Fort Collins, CO. An elderly and allegedly drunk SUV driver sideswiped officer Dawn Johnsen with both vehicles doing about 30 mph. The SUV's wheel was reportedly ripped off in the collision. Johnsen was sent to hospital but released with minor injuries.

Just days later:
South Brunswick, NJ. A drunk driving a Saturn slammed into patrolman Angelo Zecca's cruiser at high speed. Zecca was treated at the hospital and released. The police chief credited the car's seatbelts and airbags with his escaping more serious injury.

March 2013:South Brunswick (!) are still not having any luck.

Police believe a Kendall Park woman may have fallen asleep at the wheel before she crashed into a parked police patrol car early Thursday morning on Route 1 northbound, injuring an officer in the process.

A preliminary investigation showed that the 2002 Nissan Altima driven by Shawn Fraser, 42, was traveling at approximately 55 miles per hour when it broadsided a marked patrol car, injuring Patrolman First Class Mark Lorenc, police said.

Lorenc, who was sitting in the driver’s seat when the crash occurred, had been diverting traffic onto Major Road following an earlier accident that shut down Route 1 northbound in that area, police said.

Fraser was coming home from Parx Casino in Pennsylvania at the time of the accident and may have fallen asleep, police said. Investigators are still examining if alcohol played a part in the accident.

August 2013
Nasty DUI hit against an officer in Green Bay, WI. She is reportedly in serious condition. :(

Green Bay police are recommending felony charges in a suspected OWI crash that injured an 11-year department veteran.

Shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday, a Green Bay Police Department officer was leaving the Kwik Trip parking lot in the 900 block of Lombardi Ave. when an eastbound black Cadillac hit her patrol vehicle broadside. Police previously told FOX 11 the officer was on break and was responding to a call when she was struck.

The Cadillac, driven by a 25-year-old Green Bay man, was reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed. The speed limit on that stretch of Lombardi is 35 miles per hour.

Both vehicles sustained major damage – the cruiser hitting a tree. The Cadillac came to rest a couple hundred feet away. Investigators say alcohol and speed appear to be contributing factors in the crash.

Police are recommending charges of OWI (4th offense), OWI causing great bodily harm, first-degree recklessly endangering safety and causing great bodily harm by reckless driving.

"Both the officer and the suspect driver were transported to a local hospital,” said Lt. Kevin Warych of the Green Bay Police Department. “The extent of the injuries we're not releasing at this time."

A section of Lombardi was closed between Holmgren Way and Ashland Avenue overnight into early Monday morning, when it was reopened.

The crash is now the fourth incident in the last three months in which a Green Bay officer has been injured either by a suspected drunken driver or in pursuit of one.

Sucks to see things like this happening to the officers, but it is a testiment to the level of safety in the Caprice PPV...
