NEW way to search for TSB's through the NHTSA

Post by elc32955 »

OK folks, this is a new way to search for FREE TSB's and memo bulletins on our Caprices. Follow these instructions exactly and you will get a goldmine of GM information on our cars!

1. Go to the NHTSA vehicle recall page, linky here; https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls

2. Select the "Vehicle" tab on the top of the page. You will be taken to a page labeled "Safety issues & recalls".

3. Enter year, make, and model of car you wish to search. A VIN is not required to accomplish this.

4. You will get a summary bar with totals for the car with columns of "Recalls", "Investigations", "Complaints", and "Manufacturer Communications". Click the number highlighted in the Manufacturer Communications entry.

5. You will be taken to a page with a header of the car you selected in bold letters. Scroll down the page. You will see a section labeled "Manufacturer communications", in the case of the 2015 Caprice I used for the search there are 1,078 entries. There is a summary field by type of equipment that you can look through to narrow your search down. In all the goo & dribble here are the complete TSB's on the Caprice as reported to the Federal Government, NHTSA by General Motors. Keep in mind that you may be doing a LOT of reading here, but everything IS there - supposedly. Your mileage may vary depending on your patience and diligence of your search as there are a LOT of TSB's listed.

This information offering is very well hidden as I'm sure a number of for-profit sales services have just been co-opted as NHTSA data is free. Follow these instructions and you will be lead down the golden path to enhanced knowledge on your new ride! One wrinkle - the regulation apparently covered cars for the last 10 years as of 2022, so this means everything back to 2012 "should" be in there. This means 2011 cars might be the odd man out, this will have to be looked at to see if they are included. Most 2012 TSB's are applicable to 2011's anyway so this might not be a major issue.

We are always looking out for new ways to serve our fellow owners at New Caprice! This will stay as a sticky post in this section, any comments or questions please make a thread in the general discussion section.

Thanks
Eric
