2014 WN cooling fans won't turn on

Post by Odyssey »

My car has had this problem since I bought it at auction and I'm stumped. So far this is what I've tried/tested to no avail.

Pulled the fans and bench tested, both fans work with direct 12v to the motor

Checked the coolant temp sensor resistance, good. Also verified the coolant temp with a scan tool. It'll run up to 240* and climbing with no joy at the fans.

Verified fuse 68 is good

I can't get the fans to turn on with AC on, or when I command them on with HPtuners. It's also not throwing any codes related to the cooling fans. I'm stumped, any ideas?

You might want to check the main electrical connector to the fan control module to see if it has any loose or burnt connections. My 2014 Caprice had a partially melted connector due to excessive heat caused by poor connections. There are three wires in that connector power, ground and control wire.

I don't see any visible scorching. I checked the plug with a multimeter and I'm not getting any voltage to it with the fans commanded on. Do you know if there a relay or another fuse I'm missing?

Do you have HPtuners? Has the car been tuned?

The reason I ask is that the 2011-13 cars use a different style fan controller and if you put a 2011-13 config on a 14+ car the fans will not work.

I have HPTuners but haven't put a license on this car yet. But, that's definitely good to know. I have an '11 and I'll make sure I keep those files separate.

you can still scan the config using the editor, might want to make sure the fan mode is "PWM"(2014+) and not "discrete"(2011-2013)

According to the wiring schematic for the 2014 cooling fans, the power for the fans is sourced via fuse 68 in the engine fuse box which is a 60 amp jcase fuse. That appears to hot all of the time. Power from fuse 68 is fed out of the fuse box via connector X5 terminal 36 (RD/YE wire) which appears to go directly to the cooling fan control module connector.

Thank you for this, I'm getting 12v constant on fuse 68 and on the x5 terminal on the connector. Still no joy with the fans.

I'm not the best at wiring schematics, but there are 3 wires that go to the fan control module. Red/yellow verified is getting 12v constant. The black wire I assume is ground and does have continuitity with ground. The third wire is the smaller black and white wire coming from the ECM. Is there anyway to test this wire with a multimeter? Could the ECM have a fault that's not letting the fans turn on?

The little "worm" next to the switch in the fan control module indicates it is a Pulse Width Modulated switch. Meaning a scope would be best to see the waveform you are getting. But maybe you can do it with a Multimeter, JuSt do not know how. See if I can find a video.

Gotta have a hertz function on your multimeter:
