Radiator fans are loud
Super loud. Disconcertingly loud
Related to that fan warranty trying that's just popped up?
(My cars at 103k so no warranty)

sounds like you are another victim yes, might be worth trying to cry to GM see if they cover it. They are not cheap apparently.

It is "noisy"--no question about knowing that it's working!

Re: Radiator fans are loud
The high-pitched humm of the fans is one thing. When they start making a 'WOWwowWOW' sound, that's recall material.

its not a rotating WOWwowWOw sound, but a constant loud soundCrashTestDummy wrote:The high-pitched humm of the fans is one thing. When they start making a 'WOWwowWOW' sound, that's recall material.
we've got a full size van with a 6.0 and it didn't make as much noise out in the desert than my caprice does on a normal 80 degree day

Still get out there and with the engine off, see if you can wobble the fans back and forth. If you can, they need replacing. If they haven't already been replaced under the recall, you may be eligible for that. Check with the dealer.

Re: Radiator fans are loud
So 3 years later I find my car now making the dreaded noise, after looking and listening to them in operation what I observe is the passenger side one seems to be the noise maker, its very obvious as it is slowing down to a stop and also seems setup that this side runs at a high speed while the driver side one is running a low speed at some points and then gets turned up I guess as car temp rises? I do not find what others have found as far as a wobble to the fan shaft itself when its off but I have not removed from car at all. Looking online I do not see anything aftermarket for this and my 2011 is out of the extended warranty period. Anyone have one of these fan motors laying around from having changed one out? I am curious if there is anything like a bearing that could just be RR inside or if its all sealed up.

Looks like the tabs at the top may hold it together. Zoom into the pic below. You may be able to bend them to get it apart. Note the reverse threads on the shaft.

There are two 10mm bolts and the center plastic squeeze together clip at the top that holds the fan shroud down on the lower bracket. With the bolts out and the clip pinched and pulled out as well as the main harness being disconnected at the left side of the shroud, it just lifts out with some finagling around hoses.
The center nut holding each fan blade is 8mm IIRC and three phillips head screws hold each fan in place. Both motors were the same as far as I can tell.

Re: Radiator fans are loud
Did your car get the recall done for the fans? If not, you're still eligible, as far as I know. We're still getting postcards from our dealer to do the seatbelt recall on the Caprice and the fan recall on the Tahoe.xcidmigs wrote: ↑Wed Sep 04, 2019 8:28 am So 3 years later I find my car now making the dreaded noise, after looking and listening to them in operation what I observe is the passenger side one seems to be the noise maker, its very obvious as it is slowing down to a stop and also seems setup that this side runs at a high speed while the driver side one is running a low speed at some points and then gets turned up I guess as car temp rises?
