MyLink first generation stereo - basic VIN reassignment

Post by elc32955 »

Hi folks,

For the people on a budget or the DIY'ers, this tutorial video on Youtube (it's been out for about a year) illustrates one version of the process to do a VIN swap on a first generation MyLink stereo as found in the 2014-2017 Caprice (NOTE - NOT the Holden iQ found on 2011-2013 cars) to allow for a quick replacement of a broken unit. The video doesn't specifically say Caprice, but it's the same basic radio. It also gives you a good look at what's under the hood of the silver box in case your CD drive ever goes bad & needs to be changed out (assuming you have a 2014-2015 radio).

This is not intended to supplant any of the paid services, they are the experts on these units and warranty their work. However, more people are getting into the nuts & bolts of the electronics, tools to work with the boards are more available, and if your existing radio goes bad there's no reason you can't have a shot at this with a replacement due to the longer turnaround times and the expense involved into sending an older unit to the shop in this crappy economy - assuming you have the tooling, time, and expertise to attempt this yourself. However, like DIY cluster programming this is at your own risk. If you try this and hose something up, you own it. Also this video does not cover any custom code that might need to be written to re-option anything in the radio, so it's best if you only use this procedure to try a direct one for one same model-year swap of a broken unit. Again, any attempt at this is strictly at your own risk!

Thanks
Eric

That's a good vid. He also shows how to completely blank out the VIN so the radio look s like a new one to any car it is installed in.

Yep, I'm going to sticky this thread so it stays at the top with the amount of radio swaps we answer questions on.

Thanks
Eric
