Left steering control roller

Post by AL 9C1 »

Hey guys I couldn't find this mentioned in the archives. My left side steering wheel roller does nothing. When I push it, it works as an enter button but it will not scroll through options or change radio stations when I use the roller. So I want to know is this normal and the bcm has this locked out or is there a problem with my roller control? The right side volume roller works fine. Thanks in advance for responses guys.

Probably just need a new button/wheel. Switch contact can wear out.

That's what I'm hoping and it's not more involved.

Is your VIN lower than: 6G1******CL628884

I ask because there is a TSB for 11 and 12s about a radio software update. I assume Chris does this update if he gets one with an older software version?? One of the symptoms mentions steering wheel controls do not work but I assume it means the all don't work so you with only one function not working I would think might point to the switch as well. BUt if you were planning on sending it to chris may want to wait till after the programming to see if stuff gets better??

TSB:

Customers may comment about the following radio/CD functional issues:
Subject: Radio Software Update – Enhancements April 2012
Models: 2011-2012 Chevrolet Caprice PPV

1. No display (black screen), no sound and no function (only hazard light button functional).
This condition is typically recovered by cycling the ignition. (Check with customer if screen
goes white or black. If screen goes white, replace fascia as Software will not fix).
2. CD plays slow intermittently. Only affects base level vehicles without “Stored CD”
function.
3. CD forgets position.
CD starts playing from different track to the previous key cycle.
4. HVAC button stuck.
• Button behaves as if it is pressed continually.
• Most commonly seen in fan up/down buttons.
5. Internal component communication issue may cause one or more of the following
symptoms.
• When on/off button pressed to turn radio on/off, radio screen remains on screen although
audio does turn on/off.
• HVAC status not displayed on status bar.
• Clock not displayed on status bar.
• Calendar screen (displayed when radio turned off) does not show any text, only
background graphic.
• Remote (steering wheel) controls have no apparent effect on the radio.
• "Set time" option on config menu shows incorrect numbers, e.g. Hour = 87, Minute = 99.
• "Set date" option on config menu shows incorrect numbers, e.g. Date = 99, Month = 99,
Year = 9999.
• HVAC controls inoperative.
6. Radio doesn’t shut down.
Radio is observed to be on (clock screen) after more than 60 mins since key off.
7. Volume escalates without user input.
Volume control inoperative until ignition turned off.
8. CD Track title incorrect.
Song being played does not match the song displayed in track information bar.
9. HVAC temperature set point display shows “C”.
Radio displays “C” when the HVAC temperature provided is different.
10. HVAC blowing on high in defrost mode.
11. Screen brightness cannot be adjusted, radio configuration display shows “X”.
12. No sound following crank.
• All sources affected.
• Recovered by an ignition cycle.
13. Black screen and no keyboard backlighting.
Recovered by an ignition cycle.
14. Radio resets
• Radio system goes blank then system restarts.
• Does not include the system reset when a low voltage crank occurs.

Cause

Software issues in the radio system can result in these issues.

Correction – Vehicle Production

Revised Radio Software was applied in production from:
VIN: 6G1******CL628884 Built Date: 1/23/2012

Correction – Vehicles in Service

For the above listed issues, dealers should SPS program the Radio system from TIS2WEB.

So I plan on sending my radio to you guys eventually anyways. Anybody know how to test the steering control roller? I would hate to buy a set of switches and it's not the problem.

Should be able to test them with a Tech 2 they go through the instrument cluster.

Well I thought the worked by sending a specific ohm signal. Should be able to test that with a multimeter right?

Actualy no, according to the wring diagram, the rollers look to each have a wire for up and down signal. If both your up and down are not working on that side the more likely candidate would be a broken ground wire going to that side switch. Easy test would be to just stick a grounded wire in the plug slot on the switch and see if it then works properly. If it does then you got a break in the ground somewhere. And it looks as though the ground does not go through the clockspring so it must be grounded to the wheel assembly. Wonder if a screw just came loose in there?
