Adding fog lights to the Caprice

OK, as we all know our cars did not come with stock fog lights from GM. Shame since they're offered on a few international models of our cars.

I did some investigation into fog lights early on, found that the G8 headlight switch with the fog light control (switch pulls OUT) will work in our cars with a direct plug-n-play. Only problem is the G8 switch illuminates red, while all of our interior illumination is off-white. If this color difference doesn't bother you that's fine, if it does the LED's in the switch need to be changed, this means pulling the switch apart.

I found a good comprendum on parts required for fog light installs on the VE Series 2 on another forum, I'm copying the information here for everyone's review. Keep in mind the part numbers are Holden and the dollars are not in US currency.

I saw some info. on another US forum that the fog light issue has also already been figured out here, if there's info. to be had please post it up for everyone!

Thanks
Eric
Hi All,
Thought I'd share my experience installing factory foglights on my base model VE this morning.
It took about 2 hours all up -it was straightforward, with the hardest part working out how to pull off the bumper. The SIDI Omega/International commodores already have the relay, fuse, dashboard light and main wiring harness connector installed. Apparently, earlier VE's don't have these bits, and will need them fitted as well as extra wiring.

The existing headlight switch needs to be replaced with one for a Berlina or Calais (or SV6/SS), where the knob pulls out to turn on the foglights. Besides the switch, lamps and bezels, the other bits needed are a small wiring harness to connect the 2 lights to the main harness, plus screws and clips.

92172577 - Foglight harness - $37.25
92173487 - left foglight bezel - $31.52
92173488 - right foglight bezel - $31.52
92161781 - fog lamp assy x2 - $413.64 (genuine) or $100.82 aftermarket
92201133 - headlight/fog switch -$84.65 new (green illumination) or $25 secondhand
92138826 - screw x8 - $9.59
09114472 - plastic nut/clip x8 - $8.97

Total price = $244.67, or $617.14 if all new and genuine parts are used

The aftermarket lights I bought off ebay look and fit identical to the genuine ones, and come with the 55w globe. Label on the box indicates the same lights are used in various Renault models, and probably other makes too.

I want to change the green illumination to white, to match the Calais headunit I'm installing - I can get the back off the switch easy enough, but the PCB seems pretty much impossible to remove without breaking things.

Anyone been able to disassemble one of these things?
Update - I managed to pull the old headlight switch apart - I used 3 flathead screwdrivers 120 degrees apart, between the PCB and bottom of the shaft.
A bit of gentle persuasion, and the shaft came off.
There are 5 PLCC-2 surface mount green leds on the PCB - these will be replaced with white ones, but red or blue could be used too.
And here is the switch after white led modification. The Foglight switch has 6 PLCC2 leds compared to 5 for the standard one.

I just ordered the chrome bezels from Crazy Paul.
I believe they are from the Holden Berlina.
I don't know the part numbers.
They are going to look great!

Just have to figure out how to hook it up with a fuse and relay.

Just installed my fogs today. I got the chrome berlina ones also. The harness you get from CP has to be repined. The harness unplugs from the passenger side. You can see the original harness in the fog lamp hole. Just unplugged it and check where the purple wire in the original harness. With the new harness, you have to repin the purple wire in the plug. The original position is the top 1st position. You have to repin it to the 2nd position in the top just like the original harness. The fogs stay on all the time when you have the parking lights or headlights on. I'm not sure if changing to the G8 headlight switch will turn them on or off. If anyone switches to the G8 headlight switch, let me know. I don't mind the red illumination on the G8 switch because my steering wheel controls are red.

I do not have the PN's for the standard black fog lamp covers used on Steve Harbour's install.
The above is from Barry's fog light thread, posted previously.

I do not know what Barry paid for his kit, or what it included--the original kit that C.P. provided for Steven Harbour to validate the installation was, I recall, about $250, which included a WM headlamp/foglamp dash control, and a few other parts that were determined to be unnecessary. The actual lamps have never been quoted in the kit from C.P., since they're available here.

Here was the quote from C.P. for my kit - note that pricing changes constantly, and shipping is not included in this quote:
Holden Foglamp Install Kit for 9C3
- Lamps are not Included...source from USA.
- No headlamp switch
- Upgrade to 2012 Chrome bezels US$185

I have the G8 dash control, and hope to make it work, albeit I plan on bypassing the BCM.

The lamps that were available on e-bay may now be depleted--recently there showed to be only 1 left of one side and more of the other, but I've not checked recently. It was a good deal while it lasted.

CP's kit includes the fog panels, wiring harness, and screws. You can get the Omega black panels, or get the chrome trim Berlina ones. The lights you can buy here in the US.

Wait a minute, you are saying there is a harness to the fog light locations already?
I would have thought that any extra wiring in our cars is for cop lights.

gregc, I bought the same fog light pieces you did from CP.
I paid $178 shipped.

I bought a G8 headlight switch that I plan on using.
Until I look at the Caprice switch I won't know if there is an extra wire already on the connector for the fog lights.

I put my car in the body shop on Monday to get a couple of things painted.
They told me two day, but they had problems with the paint booth and got backed up and didn't do my car yet. Won't be done till Monday night.
Drat, blown weekend without the car. I was going to work on the fog lights and put the wheels on. I have a car show next Saturday, so I wanted to finish it all.

Yes, the harness you get from CP plugs into a receptacle in the passenger side. There's something plugged into it already. I believe it's the side marker lights. I unplugged it and plugged in the modified foglight harness and it lights up when you turn on the headlights. like I said in my original post, you have to repin the purple wire to the second position on the plug. The fogs turn on when you have your headlights on, but you can't turn them off unless you turn your headlights off too.

Finally got my car back from the paint shop.
I took my headlight switch out of the car and looked at the connector.
Both the Caprice switch and the G8 switch have the same amount of pins.
On the Caprice switch the upper left pin is not used.
Testing the G8 switch that pin works.
The Caprice connector doesn't have a wire going to that pin.
Image
Does anyone know how to add a wire and to a connector.
I might be able to take the connector apart enough to add the pin on the connector if I can find a pin to put in there.
I think I'm just going to use a universal fog light harness with the relay and fuse in it.
