smaller battery or delete

Post by S13REMI »

Has any one looked into doing a battery delete of the extra one in the back? At some point in the near future Im going to need to do mine for maintenance. So since we have none of the electrical accessories and will never leave our lights on for hours at a time why not delete one, or convert both to a much smaller lighter batteries. Its a lot of weight hanging over the back of the rear axles. (probably 60-80 pounds per battery)

According to local dealer, these are battery specs for 2011 PPV:

Primary battery
BCI Group 94R "PG"
765 CCA
~48#

Auxiliary Battery
BCI Group 48 "PG"
650 CCA
~40#

AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) batteries--from ACDelco - alternatives to OE (slightly heavier):

800 CCA

http://www.amazon.com/ACDelco-48AGM-Pro ... B008FWCLHU" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
760 CCA

Not 60-80# per battery, but if you include all the extra wiring & components mounted with the dual batteries, you're getting very close to 60 each, at least.

The car uses the driver's side battery, except for things hooked to the auxiliary side of the car, which is probably now nothing. Disconnect the passenger side and see. Two smaller batteries would mean (with stock wiring), you're just using one smaller, lighter battery. I kept my passenger side battery in so if someone says "go jump yourself", I can. :)

As stated earlier The batteries are not designed to work together in the traditional way that you may be thinking they are not wired in tandem. The auxiliary battery is isolated by a relay so that police equipment does not drain the normal battery It can be deleted very easily but I would not make the primary battery smaller I would leave that one alone To remove the auxiliary battery all you need to do is simply take everything out just be cautious of the cable that is coming from the primary battery as it will still be hot This cable needs to be removed from the car preferably but in a pinch could just be otherwise protected from being able to come into contact with ground I don't know if it has a fusible link in it so it would be safer to remove it otherwise could be a fire hazard The cable runs along the back of the car underneath the hood latch I mean trunk latch and is not hooked directly to the auxiliary battery but to the relay I was talking about On 99% of all of our cars there should be absolutely nothing wired to this battery other than the factory police wiring harness packages that we don't need or most of us don't need anymore

I've been thinking about using Brailles, or something similar. Definitely want to get the liquid acid batteries out, and figured I'd save weight in the process. I thought it would be more weight with the OEM batteries, but any little bit is a plus. Weight counts everywhere.

You know though, shame on GM/Holden for not making an easy access cutout for the secondary battery & police power center. The 2011 cars are now coming up on 5 years old based on assembly date (mine was 2/11) and it's going to be time for all of us to start thinking about battery refreshes shortly. My batteries are still fine, but I know soon that it'll be time to swap them out. AGM's would be nice to toss in there I'd have to agree....

I replaced my one and only left side battery, with an AGM last year. It was a PIA, but doable.

Yeah, I want to get the liquid acid batteries out of there ASAP. I've had them go bad on other vehicles, boiling acid out, or leaking out one of the terminals, corroding cables/trays/bolts, so yeah, I dump the liquid acid batteries soon after taking possession of a new vehicle.

Man, that's 'road-hugging weight'!! Any idea how much weight you removed there?
