More PPV Alternator Questions

Post by 2014ltdltz »

Thanks in advance for the constructive input - this forum is fantastic for great information.

What are the differences between the 2011-2013 6.0L V8 170 amp alternator (GM part #92268220) and the 2014-2017 6.0L V8 170 amp alternator (GM part #92254672)? Unfortunately, I do not have two cars of said year ranges to compare side by side for external differences and, from what I can tell on paper, they seem to be the same. Anyone have any insights to share?

Thank you.

2014ltdltz,
I'm going to guess, and this is just a guess, but it might have something to do with how the ECM monitors the alternator and adjusts amp and rpm outputs. Again, just a guess...

I would second Maurice’s guess that is an ECM controlling issue. They probably have a different voltage regulator plug to eliminate any possibility of installation of an incorrect alternator. Don’t own a 14-17 to compare a 11-13 to.

The 170 amp alternator has the same plug between the 11-13 and 14-17. The cases, pulley, and connectors all look identical. On RockAuto BBB Industries offers a reman 170 amp unit that fits 11-17 Caprice. So I am not certain the regulator is different. My hypothesis is 11-13 were made by one manufacturer and then in 2014 when the SS was released they offered a 140 amp version. Same housing, pulley, and connectors but different rotor and stator for less amp output. Some of the SS guys switch to the PPV alternator for the increased amps. My wild uneducated guess is maybe they switched suppliers in 2014.

I'm inclined to believe that the 2 different PN's are interchangeable. As for 14-17 having a lower output, that would be contrary to common sense, given the addition of electric steering in 2014.

Hi all - thank you for the replies.

I suspected the difference between the part numbers might have been simply a change in OEM suppliers (historically, that automatically triggers a part number change at GM), but I did not want to assume that was the case here.
