Double your reverse lights....

Post by xcidmigs »

Sorry if this isnt the correct sub forum for this wasn't sure if it should be electronics but anyways...

I was in the process of upgrading my stock reverse light for a LED bulb and noticed that strangely there is a second "bucket" if you will exactly like the stock one which is more towards the outside of the car and also covered with a clear lense and has a reflector chrome type interior, BUT WITH NO BULB in it? Not sure what the reason would be for this and there isn't any cutout I can see however its pretty easy to make you own and I found these bulb plugs which are easy enough to jumper onto the existing reverse light harness. You can see the extra empty bucked to the right of the stock blue reverse light plug. This was the driver's side light.

First step is to remove the tail light housing from car... 4x 10mm nuts and a single large white wiring connector and its free....

Next is to mark where you want to drill the hole, I believe its 1/2" in diameter but i used a stepped drill bit and just keep checking the diameter of the bulbs i was using until it fit in.

Then attach the 2 wires from the new plug into the 2 blue existing wires on the stock reverse light plug. I used quick connect taps. You will also need to cut out the 2 square sections on either side of the hole you drilled which is what allows the new plug to be inserted and then turned a quarter turn when in place to hold it secure to the housing.

Once it all fits I put the new bulbs in the plugs then reinstall everything and then over to the other side. These are the 2 LED bulbs i bought, not sure i see much difference in light output on either version but very different than the stock bulb both in color and brightness.

A lot of agencies use that space for strobe lights. Also, depending on the trim/option level of the Caprice in Australia or the Mid East, an amber turn signal bulb would be there.

so quick question. Those two blue wires. Are they both Positive? or is one a negative and if so, which one. On mine, they are both blue without any other marking. I ask because I am installing my Back Up cam that has lights that should come on when I put the car in Reverse. But not sure about the wiring on this one.

Well, when you have a BIG spool of blue wire, your circuits are all blue wire.

But yeah. At least wrap the ground with a spiral of black electrician's tape.
