SFC's: doubtful about their bolted nor welded efficacy.

Post by Scot »

Received two questions from someone not wanting to weld in SFC's and doubtful about their bolted nor welded efficacy.

From 1994: Buy a bunch of Impala SS's for <20K each, sell them modified in the Middle East for >100K each. Still new, but now T-56, 4.11 or 4.56 Richmond, Paxton Supercharged, Brembo brake, Hotchkis/Koni suspension. Sold a bunch, still have one, my daughter's. During 94, one Shiek has to have a super rigid frame. All that oil money. Progressive Automotive provides a fully gusseted, boxed, super rigid one for $$$$. Road course improvement in lap time compared with our OEM but seam welded car? Not noticeable, the driver makes a bigger difference. Any faster or +handling? None to speak of. But the Shiek is pleased with his perception of solidity, steering response, bragging rights. Very profitable for all. Lesson? A Timex keeps time like a Rolex but that's not why people buy a Rolex. What is the Shieks perception of solidity, steering response, bragging rights worth to you? Probably not $$$ or even $$. However, for only $, maybe a set of SFC's? NO WELDING? OK here's proof that there is no such thing as being a little pregnant but a little better than just a bolt on SFC.
If you bolt in a set of SFC's you will get some or < of the Shiek's perception up regulation. Need a little more? (Still far short of infinite rigidity)
Loctite Superflex, GE Metal Silicone or J-B weld clear silicone adhesives are general-purpose sealant adhesives that RTV (room temperature vulcanized). Silicone designed for use in mechanical assembly applications. Upon curing, which occurs when the product is exposed to the moisture in air, the silicone forms a tough, waterproof, adhesion that insulates vibration. It will not shrink or crack, resists weathering and reduces VNH. They are used for bonding metal when the low bond strength is offset by the higher flexibility and resistance to low temperatures, as with windshields. Special formulations are used in aircraft and aerospace applications. Pick one and apply between your SFC and the chassis, tighten bolts, allow time to set up. Will you be pleased to have the Shiek's perception of solidity, steering response, bragging rights? Mere mortals can only pray but the Middle East experiment says yes.
Different email assertion: The Holden chassis is plenty rigid OEM.
Define plenty.
Bold and confident sounding but a similar question asked of adult human females suggest YMMV.
