Stop plate Gap
I ordered new complete front struts and new Stop plates for up top. Now I have a pretty good gap between the stop plate and the body of the car causing a clunk over large road deformities. Has anyone else had this problem? The struts are in correctly, the springs were pre loaded. I am at a loss for what it could be.

Re: Stop plate Gap
I don't know if it helps, but when I did mine, I seated the assembled assembly into the "pocket" so to speak, before attaching the knuckle. So basically, before dropping the car, the strut mount was nice and snug in the area where it was going to make its home.
I can't explain it any better... someone here either PM'd me a while back or posted in a thread; I believe it was s/c'd cav but can't remember.

Well, I think the new complete struts i have purchased in April have fail bushings. Does this look like what failed bushings do?

Re: Stop plate Gap
I can't speak to that, but I know this is a very popular topic over at the G8 board as well (the space between the chassis and the strut plate). Do you have the old mounts to compare to? I'll grab a pic of my engine bay when I get home to compare.
Did you buy pre-assembled strut/spring units? Or did you have the components and build them yourself?

Re: Stop plate Gap
I purchased pre-assembled front struts. If the bearings / bushings / strut mount is bad since installing in April, That is not a good thing lol.
Re: Stop plate Gap
did you use the OE rubber strut mounts ? if so they are pretty much junk , and have been since GTO , they are to soft and collapse quickly
i use whiteline urethane mounts , even the aftermarket rubber mounts do not hold up well

Re: Stop plate Gap
Do you remember if you pointed both your washers down? Thats the way GM wants it. I think Whiteline instructions are different. But thier washers might be different also.

Re: Stop plate Gap
I am confused by what you mean of the washers being pointed down. Are you talking about the washers that sandwich the mount? If so, I bought these struts pre assembled and saw that the washers were orientated as to look like satellite dishes facing away from the mount. Is that the correct direction they should be?
