Raising car knocks out geometry

Post by lastcall190 »

Noticed something strange. Maybe someone can shed some light on what I might be experiencing:

- Drove home Friday, tight steering wheel, good tracking.
- Put up on ramps and from there supported each side to do my pads and rotors.
- Finished up, and went to bed them Sunday morning.
- Upon leaving development, noticed an immediate steering wheel shake above 40 mph. I didnt touch anything suspension related.
- Bedded brakes, took on highway a bit (thought road wasnt too smooth perhaps), still light shake (not from rotors, that was evident Friday).

Is it possible that collapsed strut mounts might droop down when lifted and when the car's weight is put back down, they end up being oriented kind of wonky (I can't think of a more apt term...)? Car has 101k miles so they are next on my list but just trying to brainstorm. Thanks.

EDIT: did some searching on the G8 board and came up with some answers.

I d check the rotor s are on flush along with the rim. Maybe you seated something a little off. It happened right after you had both the rim and rotor off. I have mine up on stands and jacks and ramps all the time.

I would check the wheel lug nut torque? I have repeatedly seen that my car will get a very odd 55mph only shake that I can only deduce is due to using an impact wrench on the lugs and not setting the torque by hand. Also maybe the rotors themselves are not great? I've seen cheap rotors cause this also....

It's 140. I also don't think jacking your car up is going to do anything to the strut bushings. Something else is up.

Reset the lugs to 140, drive to work this morning seemed better. Got a faint wobble around 50mph, but up cruising 75-85, smooth sailing.

Either way, it's way better than it was, and it was getting better even before I retorqued them. Thanks all for suggestions.

Now on to the next issue...
