Rear e brake

Post by Black6 »

Has any one tried or successfully put a camaro5 rear brake setup on their car TO INCLUDE the e brake shoes so you can use the e brake and camaro rotors not having to buy SS rotors.

its not as easy as it sounds , back a few years ago on the G8 boards , there was a guy having custom shoes made for the parking brakes to use the camaro rotors , but i think he quit offering them when the SS sedan came around

other wise you have to either swap over the whole knuckle as the next easiest option , or try to separate the hub and bearing to pull the backing plate to change to the camaro backing plate

best option is using the SS sedan rotors , since they are a direct swap

As far as I know, nobody knows what it takes to put a Camaro knuckle on these cars. I have searched it to death. There was some talk about different length axles and a different spline in the hub on another forum, but no resolution. I wanted to do it for weight savings and for an easy to machine knuckle for different brakes, but I gave up because I didn't want it to turn into a huge pile of parts that don't work together. If you know how what it takes to put a Camaro knuckle on these cars, please tell!

Hmm. So easiest thing to do would just do a full Camaro cradle swap then?

My Caprice currently has 1LE control arms on it, wouldn’t think that the knuckle or other parts would be that far off. Guess it gives the excuse for doing 3.23s or 3.42s in the car.

You can get camaro rotors for almost free or for free, so I thought it would be nice if you could just swap the complete e brake setup and be done with it.

It’s lookiig more and more like I’m just going to delete the whole parking brake, as the foot pedal is constantly annoying me and I already have camaro rear rotors.

Everyone already knows that SS rear discs work for a swap. I’m asking about doing a full camaro brake setup including the caliper, rotors and ebrake. Not just SS rotors.

This, and all forums are a place to discuss things that we aren’t “suppose” to be doing to our cars and stuff that is never the “easiest”. I want to know what’s possible and I think that’s why all of us are here.

Swapping a full camaro setup would give me a better rear end gearing, as well as having super common and much cheaper Camaro 5 components. Not to mention that the LCA I had to buy was $150 for the caprice or $30 for the Camaro 1LE LCA. So now it has camaro LCAs on it.

I was in hopes that the hubs for the camaro and caprice were the same, and that stuff could be swapped over. But I’m guessing G8/14 SS guys have already tried it. Trying to get their input.

Came across this video today, thought it might be relevant. 7 minutes in talks about the Camaro hubs and brakes.

Camaro rear rotors won’t work. They are a different “offset.” So you’d have to do more than swap just e brake. You’d have to swap knuckles.

Posting information for someone else’s future project.

I was watching that, and it seems he pointed to a dark spot under the car and asked someone off camera what the fitment issue was. There was a mumble I couldn’t make out, then the star of the show mentioned ‘yeah, we have some engineering to do’, or something like that. It still wasn’t clear to me where the issue was, or, more importantly, what the fix was.

So, to me, it still isn’t clear, but obviously isn't a drop-in option.
