ABS light without touching the brake

Post by impaladakid »

So I was driving along at 55 with the cruise set, and out of nowhere, the ABS fault came up on the DIC, along with the rest of it's friends popped up as well. I have had them come on when applying the brake, but never from doing nothing. Just hoping this might be a common issue, and I can fix it, and move on. I know it is a long shot, and it will need to be scanned to find the issue.

Most common problem in the 11-13’s seem to be the wheel speed sensors. I have had multiple sensor failures on my fleet. The rears are cheap and easy to replace. The fronts require a new bearing assembly. If you plan on maintaining the car yourself, a decent scan tool that will read and show data on all of the modules is a very good investment.

Thank you for your answer. I just mentioned to my wife it would be a good investment to get a scan tool that reads more than just OBD2. @ $125 for an hour of diag, it would only take a couple times, and it pays for itself.

I bought an Autel MX808 MaxiCheck 3-4 years ago and have been very pleased with it. It was around $400 delivered. I believe it has been discontinued, but the replacement is pretty close to the same price. It does have one quirk though. For some reason the live data for the rear spend sensors are switched from side to side. It will read a DTC for the right rear sensor, but when you look at live data, it will show no activity on the left sensor. The first time I replaced a rear sensor, I paid more attention to the live data and not the code. Needless to say, I got to do the repair again.

Had the light come on on our '12 a while ago. The scanner said it was the left rear. Pulled the sensor, and a ball of rust rolled out the hole. Thinking that might be the issue, I put it all back together. After a test revealed it was not, or simply pulling that ball of rust out of the hole didn't fix the thing, a replacement was ordered and installed, fixing the issue for good.

I don't remember if the light came on randomly, or what the combination of events were that made it happen, as it was several years ago, but I'm guessing the ball of rust somehow contaminated the sensor, requiring the replacement.
