Interesting, I was at my dealer today and whilst speaking with my tech working on the car (20k service), we were going over the brakes and their life expectancy.

He was saying that they usually last between 30-35k miles depending on use. Ive got about 60% pad left in the front with a considerable lip on the rotor. When these eventually go out, I want to go to an aftermarket pad/rotor that is just as good, but less dust. Preferably a ceramic pad.

I got 33k miles out of the front pads and rotors - would say I drive faster than average but not not heavy on the brakes.
48k on the car now and have never replaced the rear pads or rotors.
They must put some aggressive pads on the front for the police.

I have just 19k miles on my 9C3, and the brakes will very occasionally produce a momentary squeal. As soon as you hear it, it goes away. The brake fluid in the reservoir is down. I think I will need new pads soon.

I do remember making a few panic stops; but I haven't opened a wheel to look at the pads yet.

I am bracing for the possibility of pad replacement soon. The rotors I know are quite heavy (25 pounds each); maybe there's enough meat left to cut them if needed.

For my other car (1998 Olds W-car), even though it has police brakes and police rotors (they were the same part numbers as non-police, so you could say everyone got police brakes, or you can say police got normal brakes), I always put new rotors with new pads- didn't even think about cutting because they were either warped or out of thickness tolerance. They were always replaced as a set.

I was getting that same squell and a TON of brake dust on my 2011 at just 15k miles and I had just put on nice alum wheels so it was a big deal to me. Apparently the pad formula on the original cars was known for this and to be both amazing for short stops and known to eat the rotors. I was able to put a set of standard 2011 Camaro pads on the front and eliminate both problems. I would say that there is a loss of braking performance but its really only something you would notice on a massive panic stop and not part of my normal driving habit.
