I can shed some light on this issue. I used to work for VW as a tech. When the 5th generation (2005.5 +) Golf/Jetta was introduced all automatic (non-DSG) gearboxes were 6 speeds. They had also used this transmission in the 2003 and up New Beetle convertibles. Anyways, VW announced that these have lifetime fluid and they never had to be changed. As the years went on and more miles were acquired, people started noticing issues. Slippage, hard shifts, etc..., Vw found out that the valve bodies were bad and announced that the car fitted with these transmissions had a warranty extension for 10 years/100k miles for the valve body.

My car had this problem...VW literally sent me a letter 2 weeks into me swapping in a manual.

Also at the same time they introduced a 50k transmission service, this stopped the major transmission issues.
