Converter update!

Post by leadfart »

I had one of my tuner friends come by, and deliver some 17x9.5 Corvette wheels, 53 MM offset, from another one of my friends! 8-) They bolt on fine, hopefully everything clears in the back, looks like I have 1.75-2.00" behind the lip of the wheels. I've ordered some 295/45/17 MT II dr's, should fit. Will get them this week, trial fit them, then go racing. I hope I can drive them to the track, but if I have to, I will swap out, been there done that, many times. :P

He also tuned my new converter, and did and excellent job. His name is Tim Haines, and he has installed and tuned many blown SS's, on the SS forum. :D

Love this new converter, anxious to see if I can hook, and drop my sixties!

Bob, I know there are a number of people around the G8/SS/Camaro, and even the PPV community who may disagree (with my position) on the subject--see the posted links (below, which I hope you'll read thoroughly) and think about this from the perspective of just how much power you will be pushing through the wheel mounting interface which is known to be mis-matched. I won't say that failure is inevitable, but I encourage you to do it the right way, just as a matter of safety.

Wheels can be modified to work correctly with the 120mm stud pattern--there are a number of shops and specialty wheel suppliers that can handle this--for example:

Yes, Bill

I am aware of the discussions on this. I think it will work fine, but I'm not recommending any one else do it. Thanks for your concern.

Bill,

I decided to go with some Weld RT-S, S71's. 17X9, 5X120mm. They weren't cheap! Now, I've got more junk to sell to somebody else!

Those look nice. It'll be interesting to see how they look on the car.

Heh, you should see my 'wall of wheels' in the shop! I do NOT need any Vette wheels. Actually, I DO have some Vette replicas that we use on the 95 Z to help keep the back end planted. Other than that, I'm full-up on wheels and tires. Other than our GMC, we have at least one replacement set for every car in our collection, and that's 12 vehicles.

Well, since I can't wait three more weeks, I decided to mount the Mickeys's on the Corvette wheels, just for a little while. Everything fits, nothing hits, and they look like they belong there! There's plenty of room behind, they appear to clear the brake lines, the control arms clear, and nothing's rubbing anywhere.

The wheels bolted up fine, I tried to center and position them, as well as possible. These were 17x9.5, 7.3 or so, BS, and 53MM offset. They measure 10.5", and the Mickey's, which tend to run a little narrower and shorter, than advertised, measure 10.75", as mounted on the rim, and measure about 26.6" tall. So, you don't need to mess with speedo, either.

They will do in a pinch, the new Welds will fit even better, 17x9, 7.3 BS, 58MM offset, plus the correct 5x120MM bolt pattern. Weld doesn't make a hub centric wheel, may try some centering rings, if any issues crop up! They're just not here yet, and I want to go racing. Went Friday, really got the juices going!
