Differential Fluid

Post by GTObert »

So I looked on Amsoil's website and they do not recommend any fluids for the diff of a Caprice. Has anyone changed the fluid in their diff to a synthetic of some kind?

The fluid in our differentials is synthetic. And the use of other than GM fluid had created noise issues in some enthusiasts diffs. When Eric swapped his diff to 3.45's his diff made noise with Royal Purple until he swapped it out with GM fluids. The GM fluid is severe duty rated. After my 3.45 swap I used the GM
Synthetic Fluid PN 88900401 and Friction Modifier PN 88900330. I have had no noise issues what-so-ever. Both tires pull equally doing a burnout or during "UN-necessary display of horsepower" according to local law enforcement.

I didn't realize that. I guess I'll just get some GM fluid and use that. Thanks for the info.

I used Mobile 1 in mine. no problems. They have a full synthetic with friction modifier already added.

In my experience, you can use an aftermarket synthetic oil in the diff but it still requires the GM friction modifier regardless if the oil label says it's "already included" or "not needed". And only the GM additive will work. Not the crap Advance sells in the squeeze tube.

Same here, only I've seen it hit-or-miss with the need for friction modifier. Some synthetic oils need it, some don't, and it rarely depends on whether or not it has a 'not needed' label on the bottle, or not.

If crawling under the car and enjoying the aroma of gear oil (especially some of the synthetics), then get the GM stuff and run that. If you don't mind testing things, run the gear oil of your choice, test it, and if you get noise, then grab some GM friction modifier and throw that in the diff. ;)

I've run the Mobil1 LS with 1/2 bottle of GM friction modifier with good results in a few different limited slip rearends.

After a little investigation, I rescind my previous thought and will only go with GM p/n 92184900 (Delco 10-4032) due to our carbon clutch discs, like the G8. The topic has been beat to death on the G8 board, and I'll go with the consensus. You can get it on Amazon, and it's $20.87/qt there. Usually $28-30 at a dealer so I've found.
