Trip Computer Avg Mpg

Post by sardillim »

For about the last 6 months i have noticed the avg MPG drop from about 19.5 to 16.5. what was strange is that the drop happened suddenly and it didn't seem like the range per tank of gas had changed. So the last two fill ups i checked the mileage the old fashion way by dividing the miles by the amount of gallons and i found the car is really getting 21.5 - 22.0 mpg not the 16.5 as the trip computer states. So my question is how dose the trip computer calculate the MPG ? Is there some sort of a fuel flow meter ? is there anyway to calibrate this???

This is interesting. My FSM doesn't cover the V6 cars as it's a 2011 book, I'll have to browse & see how the V8's do it. Should be similar I would think...
