Cam install and DOD hardware delete

Post by orgdnr »

Have the cam installed, Vette tensioner, non DOD lifters, ARP head bolts.

As far as the installation goes. The A/C needs to be discharged and the p/s cooler disconnected to gain enough clearance for cam removal. All and all a pretty straight forward installation. I went with a custom cam with an early ivc to build more dynamic compression as our engines are 10.4-1 and not 11-1. Upgrading the rocker trunnions, springs, keepers, and seals as well. I should have her running in the morning and start the tune. Dyno sunday!!

Just pull the motor out... its far easier and MUCH simpler to torque to yield the heads with the engine on a stand. Besides... if you do not block the oil passages on the top, you will run the risk of blowing oil past the seals. Its just good to close that off with plugs like I did.

Which cam did you choose? The Comp Cams 221/581" is a beautiful cam, works great with stock exhaust, has a rumble that you can feel and a kick in the ass when you put your foot into like no other!

She's all done. Cam is .610 .613 .223-.227 on a 112 lsa. Has a bit of idle rump but wow when you punch it from a stop. Have a call in to my buddy to get her back on the tread mill.

410HP, that's impressive! Can't wait to see what the converter does.

Big brown truck showed up with the converter. Started at 4pm and fought with the headers for a bit but was able to sneak it in. .110 gap, filled her up and........... all throttle no brake she rips the tires off through 3rd gear. Really nice manners with a 2600 stall. 18.5 mpg indicated @ 75. I'm driving to twin falls Thursday (800 miles) will get an accurate reading then. CircleD two thumbs up!

Nice! A converter is in my wish list for our car. Did you have to do any programming for that converter? I understand there are 'two disc' and 'three disc' lock-up clutches available for some converters so they can handle additional power for modified engines. Which converter did you end up with?

Our 96 Impala SS has a converter in it, and while the car feels heavy driving around town, it really wakes up quickly when you stick your foot in it. Surprisingly so. That's why I'd like a converter in the 9C1.

I bought the 11.00" 2600 stall single. The clutch is holding at this power level. If it slips with the lsa on it, I'll unlock the converter above 50% throttle. I also adjusted the trans over temp warning to 210' F. Cooling fans on at 195 with a 170 t-stat.
As far as tuning goes I have a slight sag in throttle response from idle to snapping wide open because the idle quality was poor with the tight converter and I had to compensate. I'll add some to the ve and spark tables down low and get it cleaned up.
With a stock cam tune, shouldn't need any adjustments with the converter installation. What are the livernois cam specs you are planning on? If you want I can send you my tune to take a look.

I'm noticing that with most of these modded cars, owners are opting for staying with the stock intake manifold. Are none of the aftermarket manifolds (FAST/MSD, etc.) worth it at these mod levels?
