Dyno tune tomorrow

Post by bsparks72 »

As tomorrow is my birthday, I'm treating the Caprice to a dyno tune. I'm a 2 hour drive from Pat G, who is a well-known tuner with a bunch of G8s under his belt, so I would think that he'd be a good one for a Caprice as well. I'll be sure to post before and after dyno runs.

Any mods, or you just making the stock ride better? We basically did that with our Tahoe PPV. There IS a difference.

Can't wait to see your results. Yes please list any mods you have in addition to the tune and what octane the tune is set for.

I'm bone stock except for Cherry Bomb Extreme mufflers. I'm also sticking with 87 octane. I put a lot of miles on it so I'm sticking with that. When gas goes back up I can still afford to drive it. We'll see how it goes! It's on the dyno right now.

The numbers are in. Before was 299hp/307 torque. After is 322hp/346 torque. I'd say that's a worthwhile improvement. The shifts are what I'd call "noticeable" at part to mid throttle, and fairly aggressive at heavy to WOT. I also had AFM turned off, as it was unpleasant in 4 cyl mode. I was going to do a straight pipe axle back, but I didn't want drone. I've had that in the past and I wouldn't want it in a car that is on the freeway a lot. The Cherry Bombs sound great, and I have no drone at any speed. Overall I'm very happy!

Do you think the place you went would consider using your file as a mail order or PCM exchange type deal? maybe you could recoup some of your cost by acting as the middle man for that? I'm sure plenty of guys would consider doing that without any heavy mods just as you did?

I know Patrick does mail order tunes. I'm sure they're based off of proven dyno tunes such as mine. I think this was his first Caprice, but having done a lot of G8s, I'm sure he had a canned tune that he was able to tweak to get from a G8 tune to my tune. Give him a shout for options. He's easy to deal with.

I think those are great numbers ! The thing I like most about your tune is that its 87 octane friendly . I really want to do some mods to my car but I don't look forward to having to use the other grades of gas . Cause we all know gas is going to go back up for no reason . But like I said really good numbers .

So many questions....sorry!

What did the tuner have to say about this (sticking with 87)?

If the ECM was already "optimizing" timing, is the power increase based on more fuel (richer) or less (leaner), given the limitations of the fuel choice?

Did he suggest what the impacts might be if you run higher octane with the same tune--or whether he thought it was really worth doing an 87 octane tune? Obviously the tune made a difference, so it wasn't just a matter of him taking your money. The bottom line for me is whether it does any harm to reliability/durability.

How much of the power increase comes from the differences made in the transmission (not that it "makes" power), whether through better shift efficiency or other tweaks--torque management, etc?

Did you specify what you wanted as far as the shift firmness, and are you OK with how it is now?

Is there any indication of spark knock?

Really interested in what happens to your fuel economy, between tune & AFM delete. Please let us know!!!

And....Happy Birthday!
