AFM questions
AFM questions
I just bought a 2011 caprise and it has just about 150k on it, a guy at work is telling me that there is some sort of filter that feeds the 4 special lifters. Im just curious if anyone has any kind of preventative maintenance or any kind of tips to prevent the lifters from failing, if they are even known to fail.
Thanks for your time!

Re: AFM questions
Not aware of any dedicated filter feeding the AFM lifters. At 150k, no use in worrying. I have AFM turned off on my blower application. I'm not a fan anyway, I'd turn it off on an NA application, myself.

Re: AFM questions
Came across this discussion from the truck guys and in the long message it does mention a filter for the AFM system.
http://www.gm-trucks.com/forums/topic/1 ... afm-works/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Also mentions a TSB where Oil consumption is the main indicator. I know another member here had some oil consumption problems, chalked it up to lot rot, but maybe this could be the source?
Edit: Diagram here to go with text: http://www.aera.org/ep/techbulletins/TB ... TB2540.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Edit: then this thread has a picture of the screen out. Again this is for the trucks not sure any of this applies to caprices. http://www.silveradosierra.com/vortec-5 ... 71-10.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Re: AFM questions
Yes, if you have AFM then you have a gauze filter basket (Item 452) underneath the oil pressure sensor (Item 706).
You've also got a pressure relief valve (Item 455) inside the oilpan. Both items are necessary to protect the AFM oil control solenoid valves which are built into the AFM valley plate (Item 451).

Re: AFM questions
So can you get at this Filter without tearing into the engine?

Un-couple the connector to the oil pressure sensor.
Screw out the oil pressure sensor.
Fish out the filter.
Re: AFM questions
Learn something every day. Thanks, Paul. I can see issues with trying to fish that filter out! One of those five minute jobs that turns into an all day job!
