is oil pressure really not available in OBD2 data or DIC?

Post by mburrus »

hey everyone, i just bought my car... and while troubleshooting some assumed valvetrain/lifter noise, i started looking for oil pressure readings... its not available on live data from my zr13 (harbor freight) scanner, its not in the DIC in either normal or engineering modes.

what gives? wouldnt you want to make that information easily available to the mechanic or driver? do i need a more advanced scanner to read it? i have a bluetooth OBD2 dongle on order to see if i can pull it with the torque app, or some other means. do i need to buy an MDI for this?

am i missing something here?

There's tons of data that is not available to an OBD2-only scanner, and oil pressure is one of them. You'll need something better to see it. No need for an MDI. Most every aftermarket scanner will do it, just not a generic one.

Have a look here: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=5023&p=36167&hilit=obdii#p36167
Someone mentioned that some software was more or less capable than others....

There may be other places on this forum where it is covered as well. Good luck!

update: i used an elm327 with an iphone app called “car scanner”. the app is free

make sure to select the obd2/can profile, as the oil pressure rides on the CAN BUS and NOT the OBD2 bus!!!

that was the biggest revelation for me. so unless whatever youre using can read the can bus, youll never see oil pressure.

Hi Mburrus,

Can you provide some additional info on the ELM327 that you mentioned. Is there a specific model number or version that works with our cars? Suggestions on where to purchase it.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

John

Hi mburrus,

I received my ELM327 today. Everything works PERFECT. What a great find for less than $10. Monitors much more than the $100 scanner that I have. I cant thank you enough for the information.

happy to help.

i found the car scanner app is time limited... it will work for a few weeks, then it will stop reading on the CAN bus. still reads OBD2. i purchased the pro version "forever" for $7 or so through the apple store. well worth it.
