T-40 cam bolts SUPER TIGHT!!!

Post by 3rd Coast BTH »

Okay guys and gals,

I'm right in the middle of this engine modification, and I've now broken the tips off of 4, T-40 sockets attempting to remove the cam retaining ring. One was a Snap on, One NAPA -Carlyle, and two other cheap impact sockets. We were able to get one of the bolts out and it had well coated with thread sealer. Has anyone else ran into this problem with the cam retainer bolts? Can I apply heat?

A whole lot of yet with a long ratchet wrench for some torque. Do not use an impact. But use an impact socket

Tried with impact, then without impact using a long breaker bar. Snap On doesn't make an impact in T-40. We did catch the truck yesterday and bought the last two T40's that he had. Here's their result with slow steady pressure with a breaker bar.

We ended up using a cold chisel and removed the stubborn suckers that way. I think I got extremely lucky!

Those Torx bolts look like they are the TORX-Plus design. The flutes of the bit are wider and will withstand more force being applied to them. GM uses a TORX-Plus bolt on their transmission bellhousings. I went through the same hassle you did. I kept twisting/breaking my regular Torx bit sets.

I had a torque wrench set at 240# and twisted the last Snap On T-40. I don't know what gorilla put these bolts in, but they were tight!

Sounds like every bolt on my car! I feel your pain! It took a 3ft breaker bar, heat, and penetrant to get my O2 sensors off. Had to cut the top off the sensors to fit an impact on; o2 sensor sockets just stretched open from the torque. Every bolt on this car fights you.

a couple worm drive hose clamps help with that , but heating up the pipe seems to work best
