Don't forget that in regards to Impala with 3.6L, is offered in two very different cars. This may explain the 9C1 calling for PF48. Because there is no police version of the new Impala that came out in 2014, than if its a 9C1 Impala then it will be the Impala Limited body style dating back to 2006 although this car did not get the 3.6L till 2012. Could be a fitment issue or clearance.

Although I'm sure AC Delco Dexos is a fine oil, it is only a blend. Based on my success with Mobil 1 in many other ultra high mileage applications, Ill stay with Mobil 1 5W30 in the Caprice. Mobil 1 meets Dexos requirements and I bet it probably exceeds it. Its also factory fill in some other LS engines.

Also, I agree on the junk E core filters. Oddly enough as I type this I can still find the old PF52 oil filters at Reilly's. Everywhere else has the shorter PF52E.

Mobil One is all I run. I'm just about out of my PF63's. :lol: But, it seems my new truck uses them, too. :mrgreen:

I went to 2 dealers last week to buy some PF48s and was told the part was discontinued and replaced with PF48E. Is that everyone else's experience?

Yes, the PF48 has "evolved" over time. Pretty sure it's nothing to be concerned about. It's a consolidation move, as there were multiple PN's for PF48 as individual and bulk stock, with different pricing, etc. If the intent was to go to a single part again, it may be that the avoidance of double inventory and incorrect pricing for the item pulled from stock was the reason.

The PF63 trail leads to PF48 on the "classic" Impala 3.6 V6 9C1, and offers that UPF48R is an acceptable substitute for PF48.

The argument here seems to be that PF63, being longer, offers more "dirt" capacity.

The PPV, as well as G8 and SS (not sure about Camaro) carries 8 quarts of oil, so I'm just not going to obsess about filter size and dirt capacity.

Mobil 1 M1-113 (short-police car use) and M1-212 (long) are listed as suitable for the Impala 3.6, which probably translates to PF48 and PF63. The listings are both shown as "Extended Performance High Capacity Filter; Premium Quality".

The M1-113 and UPF48R appear to me to be the same filter, probably from the same source. The Mobil 1 M1-113 sells for $12.00, while the ACDelco UPF48R, an approved substitute for any PF48 application, sells for $7.78 (at Rock Auto. Mi-113 is the Mobil 1 short filter for PPV 6.0, also.

I won't use an E-Core Delco filter. Sure, they may be fine, but I'm not risking it. There are too many known good filters out there. Here is one example on the E-Core:

Agreed. The E-cores I've seen have a plastic core. I prefer a metal core because I've seen this type of plastic degrade, crack and fall apart over time in other applications (anybody own a B-Body that had the oil level sensor fail???). If the car sits over the winter like mine does, I don't want thin plastic parts immersed in oil (possibly degraded/acidic oil depending on how many miles were put on during summer). I have no basis for this except my own experience with the long term effects of plastics versus metal in oil contact situations. I've found mysterious black plastic bits in engines during tear down or rear main seal replacement. No thanks.

Most people change their oil every 3 months or 3K miles, and in that interval, I see little danger in the plastic failing. But a car with limited use and long term storage (like many of my cars), no thanks.

To summarize, if you have cars in long term storage, I recommend sticking with high quality metal core filters. If you change your oil and filter regularly, then it probably doesn't matter.

One advantage of the longer filter IMHO is on these engines, the longer filters are easier to get off.

Not sure about the L99 but I know the Camaro 1LE LS3 also has 8 quart capacity. It has been said here the reason for the 8 qt. capacity is due to AFM requirements, which may be true, however, many other GM Gen IV V8s with AFM don't hold that much oil. I believe it may play a role in many considerations,

1. Such as GMs oil life system (If you go by the oil life system for oil changes, chances are your going to lose some oil between changes and most consumers don't check their oil regularly and the extra capacity "could" prevent engine damage in the event the car is run a quart or two low for extended amount of time.)

2. Engine oil temp control (seems all of the 8 qt V8s are either in high performance applications or fleet usage such as the Caprice.

3. Reduced chance of oil starvation during aggressive driving and or continuous high RPM operation.

The city I work for does semi regular oil analysis on their Caprices and other vehicles. Not sure if the info would be helpful here as they unfortunately use the incorrect viscosity and extend the drain intervals beyond what GM calls for let alone what most of us here would be comfortable with. A battle I continue to fight with city shop.
