Sounds like a lifter failure...
Re: Sounds like a lifter failure...
Exactly my experience as well, lastcall. Your memory is accurate; I just did my cam swap about 6 months ago. My engine was super low miles, so I didn't even clean the pan gasket surfaces... I just bolted everything back together with two little dabs of RTV on the timing cover corners. Zero leaks.

Dropping the oil pan is easy and is required if you are removing the oil pump. When I did my cam I lifted the engine and actually removed the oil pan since I didn't want my pickup tube preloading my Melling oil pump housing while shimming the rotors in place. It also gave me the opportunity to verify the condition of the oil pickup strainer.

no updates as of yet. work shit.... I have my son's birthday tomorrow and parent-teacher conferences on Monday for all three kiddos. Tuesday has been reserved for the removal of the heads to ascertain where the failure is coming from. I will post an update/pics then.

Well....fudge. sure enough, the lifter on the intake valve for cyl 3 is ffed. Stuck in the bore. I've got pb blaster soaking on it now and will pick up a slide hammer remover tomorrow at harbor freight.

It does happen to non-DoD lifters. But it won't come out? Man, that's really effed up. Hope the lifter bore is OK. You'll have to inspect the cam and it will probably need to be replaced. I'd replace everything with non-DoD and get it tuned out.

Re: Sounds like a lifter failure...
Well, good news and bad news. The lifter came out today... the roller was sitting right there on the needing to be replaced cam. Unknown where the other pieces are. And that's not the worst part. When the lifter failed it totally screwed the lifter bore and knocked a chunk out of it. Anyone have a block sitting around they don't need?

Re: Sounds like a lifter failure...
Truly a sad day. How can something so small cause so much damage? Wonder if idling would have caused that?

Re: Sounds like a lifter failure...
Hate to see a failure like that. May be able to take the block and have a little weld build up in that area and have a bushing put in the lifter bore.
I believe the unit centex2013 picked up had about 7400 idle hours, so the roller has followed the cam profile quit a few times.

Re: Sounds like a lifter failure...
the lifter bore , can be bored out and a sleeve put in
Re: Sounds like a lifter failure...
There's also the rest of the chunks of metal to fish out. Looks like an almost complete rebuild even if the bore can be sleeved.
