I like them Wix XP filters because I go about 7K between changes (I follow the oil life monitor)

Think this is from Motor publication:
SEO stands for Synthetic Engine Oil

What's the preferred oil for these cars?

BTW-NAPA Gold filters are WIX. WIX 51036 is a Napa Gold 1036 for example. WIX can also be sourced through Summit and Jeg's if you just happened to be ordering through them for something else. ;)

I use Mobil 1 5w30 Dexos compliant, just because.

And for the filter, I use the Fram Ultra Synthetic. Granted I wouldn't use any of their other filters on a lawnmower, the Ultra Synthetic has a very good filtering media. I base myself on this comparison, which not only looked at construction, but filtering efficiency and other factors. Although it's dated, most of the filters are still in production.

Yeah, make sure you pick a Dexos-compliant oil. Not all Mobil1 is Dexos.

Yep, any synthetic will do. But it has to be DEXOS-1 compliant, green label. To make it more confusing, there is a DEXOS-1 Gen 2 spec out now that is also compliant with these cars. Not to be confused with the DEXOS-2 spec with a blue label, which is not what your want.

How fast will my engine explode if I choose to use Royal Purple HMX (high mileage 75,000+)? If I'm correct it is a true Group IV or V PAO oil, however it is not Dexos approved. On the HMX bottle they recommend two drain intervals of 3,000 miles each because it cleans the engine so aggressively. Then after those two intervals, you can extend to 15,000 or 1 year with proper filtration (something I would never do anyway). That's also why I will not buy into the Mobil 1 annual either, and when it comes to Mobil 1 EP its a decent oil, however it is not a true synthetic. Its a group III base stock with Group IV and V additives. RP HMX is API licensed but only for 2004 or older vehicles.

Since I'm over 100,000 miles I am out of warranty and I have complete faith the HMX will do great. I put it in my Silverado with 150,000 miles and with only 800 miles on the clock its starting to look dirty (it's doing its job). After those two drain intervals I plan on switching back to the regular Royal Purple 5W-30, which is API licensed and Dexos Gen 2 approved. I've also had friends whose fuel economy went up 2mpg and in a couple cases 3mpg just by switching to Royal Purple.

Royal Purple HMX

Royal Purple High Performance (Standard API and Dexos Gen 2 approved)

Personally, I don't think that arguably one of the best oils on the market will hurt my Caprice. In any case, the HMX will be much better for my Caprice than the Quaker State synthetic blend (which is what Washington State Patrol put in). I also always use the KN high performance filters with the 1" nut. Watching the oil filter take down video of all the popular brands, WIX XP and KN are the best. Royal Purple filters and Amsoil filters have too much glue in them to "seal" the media in place, they looked very similar. I've heard before Amsoil and Royal Purple are owned by the same company but I don't know if this is true.

Why did GM create the dexos specifications?
Vehicle manufacturers are creating increasingly complex engines as they work to meet stricter emissions regulations and increased fuel economy standards. GM enacted its dexos specifications to create a global standard for its vehicles; so, the oil specifications that apply in the United States, also apply in France, South Africa and Japan.
GM is not alone in issuing specific oil standards; Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Volkswagen also do it. But GM’s move from five recommended oil specifications to two –dexos1 for gasoline-powered engines and dexos2 for diesels – seems to have generated more confusion among drivers.

AFM performance can be impacted over time from sludging of non-dexos oil usage.

I completely understand, but that's also the entire purpose of HMX - to clean the engine out. I am only going to use it for the two 3-4,000 mile intervals and then switch to the regular Royal Purple. Since this is a summer car I'll be doing all of this next year anyway.
