DOD Lifter FAILURE!

Post by B4CTROOPER »

Took my valve covers off to see where my misfire is. Suspected bad lifter. After removing the valve covers, we cranked the engine over, and all the rockers moved on both banks. After cranking for more than about 6 seconds, the 4th rocker back on the pass side suddenly stops moving. Crank again it will do the same thing.

Ripped it apart, and found this. Figures. Ah well, could have been worse.

Can't afford a DOD delete right now. I just posted an ad looking for a factory DOD cam. Hopefully I find one soon. They should be available for next to nothing or even free.

Replied to your ad. I might have his lifters or anything else you need too.

Seems to be somewhat common.
This just came out of mine w/140k miles. Don't know if I'd blame the lifter- all the rollers look OK.

I pulled the cam yesterday. 3 lobes were worn, one DOD lobe, 2 roller lifter lobes. The regular roller lifters look fine, but I'm replacing them anyway. I also had a couple of other lobes that looked like yours. Could it be poor oiling on the camshaft, or poor quality metal?

I'm going to pull out the oil screen under the oil pressure sending unit to make sure it is clean. It's right there with no intake on.

Well, here's some carnage pics. As you can see, 3 lobes worn. One lobe was for a collapsed DOD lifter, the rest were regular lifters. Thought that to be weird.

When installing the DOD lifters, I noticed when I installed the lifter in the bore the bad DOD lifter was located in, I was able to spin it in the lifter tray! EVERYONE TACKLING THIS JOB PLEASE CHECK ON THIS! It would suck to swap a lifter and cam, the have to do it again because the lifter rotated in the bore. I picked up a new lifter tray, and all better.

In all, the job wasn't that bad to do. A few hundred bucks and it's on the road again.

It's been a few years since I drove one of these. I forgot how much fun they are!

We're you able to find a DoD cam, then? Otherwise I will have mine available I'm a few days, assuming it's not junk. Otherwise I'm making another lamp out of it.
