AC belt pulleys

Post by indianajoe »

I was wondering if anyone has replaced the idler and tensioner pulleys for the AC belt

I can't seem to find any part numbers. Both appear to be 65mm OD and 17mm ID, but one is metal and one is plastic for some reason

I've only been able to find the tensioner assembly. Not the tensioner pulley inly, and not the idler pulley.

Anyone got part numbers?

As far as I have ever seen they only come in a bracket assembly. The G8 guys have been buying the upgraded one for years because the old design used to throw the belt.

GM part Number 92252927 About $200

But if you wanted to get the pulley by themselves you could would just have to search the catalogs by measurements.

That's the way it is with the 94-96 B-body/LT-1 cars. On some of the tensioners, the pulley assembly is held on by a snap ring, so you might be able to press the pulley off, and press the bearing out. Some makes, though, the pulley assembly has the bearing molded into the pulley.

Both instances where I've had to replace the pulley on a vehicle was because the tensioner itself disintegrated when I moved it to remove the belt. One replacement tensioner ended up developing a noisy bearing, but the bearing was not replaceable on that tensioner assembly.

So, if you need to replace the pulley because of a noisy bearing, I'd recommend getting the whole assembly, in case the tensioner part breaks when removing the belt, and then replace the pulley bearing and retain the OEM unit as a spare.

That way you're not stranded with a two-piece tensioner assembly.

Wow, I just reached in and took the pulleys off, I didn't realize it was 2 for the assembly...

I guess I should replace the tensioner, as I have had one fail before

Thanks for the help

Yep. The OEM bits can serve as your spares. You were lucky, IMHO.

well i finally decided to do this tensioner swap, and i have no idea how to do this.

it looks like you have to pull the compressor off? but theres the front frame rail in the way and it has ac lines

Ye who have replaced tensioners how did you accomplish this feat?
